The Big Four

Embarking on the Mosquito Lagoon / Indian River with Captain Alex Heim guarantees exciting moments, chasing the top 4 fish! Prepare for an exciting journey with Alex as your guide, as you attempt to hook the top 4 prize fish residing in these waters!

Redfish

Redfish are the undisputed stars of the Mosquito Lagoon flats. Known for their coppery color and trademark black tail spot, they cruise the shallow grass and mudflats tailing for crabs and shrimp. Sight-fishing for redfish in skinny water is a visual thrill, and once hooked, they put up a determined, bulldog-style fight. They're strong, stubborn, and love to test your drag — a favorite for both fly and spin anglers.

Spotted Sea Trout

Spotted sea trout are ambush predators often found lurking along grass beds, drop-offs, and sandy potholes, especially during low-light hours. While they’re known for aggressive topwater strikes, trout also readily hit soft plastics and live bait. They’re fast, flashy fighters with sharp gill plates and plenty of head shakes. Larger “gator” trout are prized catches, and the Indian River is one of the best places in Florida to find them.

Snook

Snook are smart, strong, and incredibly fun to catch — especially in warmer months when they push into the northern stretches of the Indian River. These fish love structure, current, and ambush points, making docks, mangroves, and shadow lines prime territory. When hooked, they explode into acrobatic runs and have a nasty habit of darting into cover. Snook demand accurate casting and a bit of finesse, but the reward is well worth the challenge.

Tarpon

Tarpon are the silver kings of the lagoon, showing up seasonally in channels, basins, and deeper pockets of the Indian River system. Known for their explosive jumps, aerial acrobatics, and pure brute strength, tarpon are bucket-list fish for good reason. Juveniles (20–40 lbs) are often targeted in backwaters and are perfect for light tackle or fly. Hooking into one is a rush — landing it is a memory you won’t forget.
